Habit tracker app

Short answer

A habit tracker app records whether you did something each day and counts your streak. Habitify's free plan allows 3 habits and its premium costs A$79.99 a year, read on 20 October 2026.

Most habits fail in the first weeks, not because people lack willpower but because the tracking is a chore. The Daily Journal keeps it to one tap and one line, and shows your streak, your weeks in a row and your badges. It is free to start, and here is how it compares with the paid apps.

  • One tap or one line a day, no setup marathon
  • Current streak, days active and weeks in a row on Home
  • Share with one person you trust, or keep it private
  • Prices of seven habit apps, read from their own pages

What a habit tracker is for, and what it cannot do

A habit tracker turns an intention into a visible record. You decide on a small action, you mark it done each day, and the app shows the run. The record does two jobs: it reminds you that today counts, and it gives you something to be proud of on a hard day. It cannot do the habit for you, and a long streak is a tool, not a verdict on your character.

The Daily Journal treats habits as part of a day rather than a separate list. Food, exercise, drinks, sleep times, a thought and something you are grateful for sit in the same place, and Home turns them into a streak, a count of days active and weeks in a row. That is lighter than a dedicated habit app, and for many people lighter is the point.

How long a habit takes to stick

The best known study followed people who picked a new daily behaviour and recorded how automatic it felt. The median time to feel automatic was 66 days, and individuals ranged from 18 days to 254 days. The 21 day figure you often see is not what that research found. Our how long to build a habit guide has the detail and the source.

Two other findings matter for a tracker. Simple actions settled faster than complex ones, and missing a single day did not undo the progress. A good tracker should therefore make the action small and make a miss feel recoverable, which is why we count weeks in a row as well as days.

How a streak is counted, with a worked example

A streak is the number of days in a row you did the habit. The count runs back from today, or from yesterday when today is not done yet, so you are not punished for checking in at breakfast. Suppose you did your habit on 10, 11 and 12 October, missed the 13th, then did every day from the 14th to the 22nd. On the morning of the 23rd your current streak is 9 and your longest run is 9.

Now give yourself the 13th as a planned rest day. A rest day bridges the gap without adding a day, so the same record reads as a current streak of 12. That is how the free habit streak calculator works, and it is why a sick day or a travel day does not have to wipe out two weeks of effort.

A first month that is hard to fail

This plan works with one to three habits, which is also the planned free limit for the habit list. Fewer habits, done for longer, beat a long list abandoned.

  1. 1
    Week 1: pick one anchor

Choose the thing you already do every day, such as making coffee or brushing teeth. The new habit goes straight after it. This is habit stacking, explained in our habit stacking guide.

  2. 2
    Week 1: make it tiny

Two minutes counts. A walk around the block, one page, one glass of water. You can scale up later.

  3. 3
Week 2: add the second habit

Only add it once the first feels easy. Put it after a different anchor so the two do not compete.

  4. 4
Week 3: use the streak, not willpower

Check Home each morning. The run you can see is a reason to do the small thing even when you do not feel like it.

  5. 5
    Week 4: look back

Open Tracking and read your days side by side. Keep what works, drop what does not, and plan the next four weeks.

Why three habits is plenty

Habitify's free plan also stops at 3 habits, so a limit of three is common rather than stingy, and it is the free limit we plan for the habit list. It is also good advice. Each habit competes for the same attention, and three is about what most people can hold while the first one is still becoming automatic.

If you outgrow three, tell us when you sign up. We have not set a paid plan, and what people want to track decides what we build and what the limits should be.

Tracking with a partner or a friend

Doing a habit with someone is a well used way to keep going, because a missed day is visible to a person you like. In the Daily Journal you can share your journal with one person at a time, and stop whenever you like. Nothing is shared by default, and the person you share with sees only what you choose.

If you would rather start on paper, our habit tracker printable is a free one page grid. The habits hub lists every habit guide and tool we have.

Questions people ask

What is the best habit tracker app?

The best one is the one you open tomorrow. Dedicated apps such as Habitify, Habitica and Strides add per habit streaks and widgets, while a journal style tracker like ours keeps everything in one daily check in. Try the free tiers and keep the one you actually use.

Is there a free habit tracker app?

Yes. Habitify has a free plan for 3 habits (read 20 October 2026), and the Daily Journal is free to start. Paid plans mostly add more habits, widgets and charts.

How long does it take to build a habit?

One well known study found a median of 66 days for a behaviour to feel automatic, with a range from 18 to 254 days. There is no single number, and missing a day did not undo progress. See our habit guide.

What happens to my streak if I miss a day?

In the Daily Journal the streak counts days in a row, so a missed day ends the current run, while your longest run and your weeks in a row stay on record. A planned rest day is not built into the app yet, but the streak calculator shows how one would work.

How many habits should I track at once?

Start with one to three. Each habit needs attention while it becomes automatic, and three is the free limit on Habitify's plan and the one we plan for ours. Add the next one only when the first feels easy.

Can I track habits with my partner?

Yes. You can share your journal with one person at a time, or a group, and stop whenever you like. Nothing is shared until you choose, and the other person sees only what you share.

Does the Daily Journal send reminders?

Plan holds reminders you set yourself, with a repeat schedule, and a calendar view. You choose what to be reminded about, and nothing is sent to anyone else.

Is a habit tracker the same as a to do list?

No. A to do list is for things you do once, and a habit tracker is for things you want to repeat. A tracker's value is the run of days, so it asks one question each day instead of building a list.

Can I use a paper habit tracker instead?

Yes, and many people start there. Our free habit tracker printable is a one page grid. If you later want streaks counted for you, the app does that.

Why do habit apps charge a subscription?

Most apps in our October 2026 read sell extra habits, widgets, charts and sync behind a monthly, yearly or lifetime plan, from A$1.99 to A$229.99 across the tiers we read. A subscription you stop using costs the most, so check the free tier first.

Is my habit data private?

Private by default. You can share with one person or a group and stop at any time. The people who run the app can see counts, such as how many days you wrote, but not what you wrote. If anyone is ever given access to read your entries, your Profile page says so. The privacy policy has the detail.

How much does the Daily Journal cost?

It is free to start and no paid plan is set. If one is ever added you will see the price before you pay, and your entries stay yours.

Where these figures come from

  • Competitor prices: each app's own pricing page or its Australian App Store listing, read on 20 October 2026 and saved in our competitor file. Streaks is named by ChatGPT but we have not read its price.
  • Which apps people name: ChatGPT, asked on 22 October 2026. Names only, not a ranking.
  • Habit formation: Lally P, van Jaarsveld CHM, Potts HWW, Wardle J. How are habits formed: modelling habit formation in the real world. European Journal of Social Psychology, 2010 (median 66 days, range 18 to 254).
  • Habit stacking and tiny habits: BJ Fogg, Tiny Habits, and James Clear, Atomic Habits (2018).
  • Streak counting: the rule used on our habit streak calculator, worked on 23 October 2026. The planned free limit of 3 habits is a setting in the app's code that is not yet shown in a habit list, and the 56 badges are the app's count on that date.

Updated 23 October 2026. A figure that was not read from a file is written as unknown. Prices change: check the supplier's own page before you rely on one. We are not affiliated with any app named here.
