Weight loss journal
A weight loss journal records food, movement and weight so you can see a trend. Paper versions had a median of A$17.38 on Amazon AU and A$29.99 on eBay AU on 21 October 2026.
The scale on one morning tells you very little. A journal tells you more: what you ate, how you moved, how you slept and how the week felt, read together. The Daily Journal is free to start and keeps all of that in one place. This page shows the safe numbers, what the paid coaching apps charge, and what we have not built yet.
- Food, exercise, drinks, sleep and mood on one daily screen

What a weight loss journal is for
A weight loss journal is a record you read back, not a verdict you pass. You write what you ate and did each day, add a weigh-in when you choose to, and look for patterns over weeks. Many people find the pattern is not the food they expected: it is the late night, the skipped breakfast or the week after a bad sleep.
The Daily Journal is the writing half of that. Today has boxes for food, exercise, drinks, bedtime, thoughts and gratitude, and Tracking lines up your days side by side. It does not have a weight chart, a calorie target inside the app or coaching, and we say so in the table below. It is built for people who want the habit of looking back, without a subscription.
What is included
- Food, exercise and liquid boxes on Today
- Thoughts and gratitude lines for the harder days
- Tracking to read your days side by side
- Your own text box if you want a weigh-in line
Who it is for
- Healthy adults who want a gentle, steady approach
- People who find calorie apps stressful and want a diary
- Anyone who wants sleep and mood beside food
- People who prefer to look back weekly rather than weigh daily
A safe deficit, worked out for two people
The most common rule of thumb is that a deficit of about 550 kcal a day produces a loss of around 0.5 kg a week. It is an estimate, not a measurement of any one person. Our calculators cap the deficit at 300 or 550 kcal a day and never set a target below 1,200 kcal for women or 1,500 kcal for men, because crash plans are the opposite of what a journal is for.
For a 35 year old woman, 165 cm and 68 kg, with light activity, total daily energy is about 1,891 kcal, so keeping weight means about 1,900 kcal and a gentle loss means about 1,350 kcal, above her floor. For a 42 year old man, 180 cm and 90 kg, it is about 2,503 kcal to keep weight and 1,950 kcal for the same loss. The gap between the two shows why copying a friend's number is a poor plan.
| Woman, 35, 165 cm, 68 kg | Man, 42, 180 cm, 90 kg | |
|---|---|---|
| Keep weight (rounded to 50) | 1,900 kcal a day | 2,500 kcal a day |
| Gentle loss, 550 kcal below | 1,350 kcal a day | 1,950 kcal a day |
| Weekly deficit at 550 a day | 3,850 kcal | 3,850 kcal |
| Floor we never go below | 1,200 kcal | 1,500 kcal |
Worked on 23 October 2026 with the formulas in our calculators (Mifflin St Jeor 1990, light activity). Estimates for healthy adults, not personal advice.
What to write each day, and what to leave out
A journal you keep beats a perfect one you drop. Five short lines a day is plenty: what you ate, what you did, how you slept, how the day felt and one thing that went well. The last one matters because progress is easy to miss when you only look at a number.
Weigh yourself no more often than you can bear. Weight moves from day to day for reasons that are not fat, so a weekly average says more than any single morning. If the scale spoils your mood, stop for a month and rely on how clothes fit and how you feel.
- Write what you actually ate, not what you meant to
- Note hunger and mood, not only quantities
- Count progress in sleep, energy and movement as well as kilos
- If you feel anxious about numbers, stop and talk to a doctor
A twelve week plan that does not rely on willpower
A rough structure you can bend. Every step is a habit, not a rule.
- 1Weeks 1 and 2: just record
Log food, exercise and drinks every day with no changes. You are learning your normal.
- 2Weeks 3 and 4: find one pattern
Read your days in Tracking. Pick the single easiest thing the record shows, such as a late snack or a skipped breakfast.
- 3Weeks 5 to 8: change one thing at a time
Use our calorie calculator for a gentle target, and move toward it slowly. Add a walk before you cut a meal.
- 4Weeks 9 and 10: protect the habits
Look at sleep and mood beside food. A short night often shows up as a hungry next day.
- 5Weeks 11 and 12: review
Read the whole record. Keep the changes that worked, drop the ones that did not, and decide the next twelve weeks. If progress has stalled, a doctor or dietitian can help.

Why coaching apps cost what they do
The largest apps in our read sell a program, not a diary. Noom's listing runs from A$64.99 to A$309.99 because it is built around coaching and a structured course. If you want a plan someone else designs and guides, that price buys it. If you want a diary and a habit, you can start for nothing.
A diary has one more advantage: it asks nothing of you except honesty. No streak shaming and no scores. If you later want a program, your record is ready to bring to a doctor or dietitian.
When a journal is the wrong tool
Tracking food and weight is not safe for everyone. It is not for anyone under 19, who is pregnant or breastfeeding, who has a condition such as diabetes or kidney or heart disease, or who has had an eating disorder or worries about their relationship with food. If any of that fits, please talk to a doctor first.
If you are in distress, support is available at any hour in Australia: Lifeline 13 11 14, Beyond Blue 1300 22 4636 and the Butterfly Foundation for eating concerns on 1800 33 4673. In an emergency call 000.

Questions people ask
What should I write in a weight loss journal?
Write what you ate, what you did, how you slept, how the day felt and one thing that went well. Five short lines a day is enough, and honest beats detailed.
How much weight can I safely lose in a week?
A common rule of thumb is about 0.5 kg a week, from a deficit near 550 kcal a day, and never below 1,200 kcal for women or 1,500 kcal for men. It is an estimate, and a doctor can advise on you.
How many calories should I eat to lose weight?
It depends on your age, height, weight, sex and activity. In our examples a 35 year old woman at 68 kg would eat about 1,350 kcal and a 42 year old man at 90 kg about 1,950 kcal for a gentle loss. Use the calorie calculator for yours.
Does the Daily Journal have a weight chart?
Not yet. You can add your own text box for a weigh-in line, and Tracking will line it up with the rest of your day. A weight chart is not built, and we will not claim it is.
Is there a free weight loss journal app?
Yes. The Daily Journal is free to start, and many paid apps have a limited free tier. Paper journals in our read cost a median of A$17.38 on Amazon AU.
How often should I weigh myself?
As often as you can without it hurting your mood. Weight moves day to day for reasons that are not fat, so many people use a weekly average. If the scale distresses you, take a break.
Is a weight loss journal better than an app like Noom?
They are different. Noom's listing ran from A$64.99 to A$309.99 on 20 October 2026 and sells a coaching program. A journal is a free record you read back. Choose a program if you want guidance.
Can I count calories in the journal?
Yes. The Food page adds up calories, protein, carbs, fat and fibre for what you type, using an everyday food table. See the calorie counter page for what it does and what it does not.
Who should not use a weight loss journal?
Anyone under 19, who is pregnant or breastfeeding, who has a medical condition affecting weight or diet, or who has had an eating disorder. Please talk to a doctor. See the health disclaimer.
Why did my weight go up when I ate less?
Daily weight moves with fluid, food in the gut and many other things. Look at the weekly average and at how you feel rather than a single morning.
Who can see my entries?
Private by default. You can share with one person or a group and stop at any time. The people who run the app can see counts, such as how many days you wrote, but not what you wrote. If anyone is ever given access to read your entries, your Profile page says so. The privacy policy has the detail.
How much does the Daily Journal cost?
It is free to start and no paid plan is set. If one is added you will see the price before you pay.
